Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) is an indispensable tool to study exotic electronic ground states of correlated electron systems with atomic resolution. Furthermore the spin-degree of freedom can be accessed in spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM). This method provides unique insight into the electronic and magnetic properties of correlated electron systems. In this project I will use (SP-) STM/STS for the investigation of spin and charge ordering phenomena in prototypical correlated electron systems. The focus of the project will be on transition metal oxides (TMO) and iron pnictide superconductors. The method of SP-STM will be applied to prototypical compounds such as cuprate high-temperature superconductors HTSC and the iron pnictide Fe-based superconductors. As the ultimate goal the charge and spin ordering of the unconventional high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d will be investigated.
