Combined measurement of aerodynamic and mobility diameter for the online determination of agglomerate morphology

Subject Area Mechanical Process Engineering
Term from 2012 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 220590379

In the first period of the project, a new classifier (Differential Aerodynamic Particle Sizer, DAPS) for aerosol particles based on their aerodynamic diameter in the range of 100 nm to 5 µm has been developed. For the second period of the research project, dedicated experiments will be carried out concerning the physics behind aerodynamic focusing and its dependency on pressure, gas velocity, gas composition and particle density. A combination of the DAPS system with the optical measurement techniques developed in the projects TP2 and TP4 which yield the radius of gyration is scheduled. The combination of these measurements both in parallel as well as in series allows a mutiparameter evaluation of the particles, especially useful when the particle materials precludes LII measurements of the primary particle size which are however possible with the DAPS system as the Stokes diameter is strongly depending on the primary particle size. Furthermore, it is planned to optimize the system for industrial application. This will be achieved by adding an optical single particle counter to the electrical particle detection and by extending the minimal range of the aerodynamic diameter from 100 nm to 30 nm. Online measurements of the particle structure will then be conducted for production processes with the industrial partners.
