Inkjet printing of thick-film capacitors based on organic-inorganic composites

Based on the successful development of a ceramic/polymer composite ink system within the first project, different approaches to optimize the dielectric properties and the capacitance will be investigated in a follow-up project. Therefore, larger ceramic particles will be used for the inks to determine the effects in the permittivity of the composite. In addition to increasing the permittivity of the composite, the capacitance of printed capacitors should be increased by thinner layers and multilayer layouts in the follow-up project. For the realization of those approaches surface-modified ceramic particles will be used. By modifying the ceramic particles with crosslinkable end groups a crosslinking reaction after the deposition is possible. The influence of modified ceramic particles, cross-linkable organic molecules and free radical initiators on the curing behavior will be examined offside of the printing process first. Then based on these results, printable inks will be prepared and the drying behavior examined. The implementation of this innovative approach to the inkjet printing process should finally enable both the production of thinner layers as well as the fabrication of printed multilayer capacitors.
