I want to extend the application of spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) to address nano-spintronic systems comprised of technologically relevant materials like rare-earth elements as well as address the spin dynamics of systems consisting of single and coupled atoms on surfaces. Considering SP-STM has been historically utilized to address static magnetic properties, especially with atomic-scale systems, it will be a primary focus within this project to address spin dynamics at the atomic scale. As an emphasis, phenomena like spin-transfer torque at the atomic level and its influence on the dynamical properties of systems will be a focus. Furthermore, we will address the precessional dynamics of individual spins coupled to itinerant electron baths. A second theme of this project will be combining single atom magnetometry techniques with the bottom-up fabrication capabilities of the STM to realize model magnetic systems. To this end, there will be an emphasis on utilizing non-magnetic substrates which exhibit indirect exchange interactions. As these methods have previously focused on 3d transition metals, the expansion of these techniques to address more relevant materials like f-electron systems, which play a prominent role in hard-magnet technology, will be emphasized.
