Final Report Abstract

The main goal of this project was to observe and study a statistically significant sample of radio sources with VLBI. An input sample has been taken from the COSMOSA/LA catalog by Schinnerer et al. (2010) and has been observed in 2012/2013 using novel observing and correlation techniques developed in previous, smaller projects. These observations were successful and have fulfilled the expectations, providing 468 detections out of 2865, and providing a product of depth and sensitivity unprecedented for a VLBI survey. To complement the data, new observations with a target sensitivity of around 3 µJyy beam^-1 were scheduled with the VLBA+GBT, providing 10 additional detections over a smaller area. A collaboration has been started with the COSMOS project to complement the data with sensitive multi-wavelength data for detailed analysis. Initial exchanges of data with other groups have proven to be very successful, leading to the publication of two papers and providing accurate position verifications for the COSMOS 3 GHz survey. First scientific result include differential radio source counts of radio-emitting AGN to unprecedented levels, case studies of radio-quiet quasars and radio-AGN host galaxies, and input to associated COSMOS surveys.
