Final Report Abstract

A new matching strategy for receivers has been developed, which maximizes the sensitivity of a receiver, i.e. provides a required minimum SNR with the lowest possible receive signal energy with a given low noise amplifier (LNA). This is a new compromise between power matching, which provides maximum signal energy and noise matching, which provides maximum SNR. Depending on the parameters of the LNA and the required minimum SNR for a specific service, neither power nor noise matching may provide the best sensitivity of the receiver. In such situations the proposed approach is optimum. For designing an optimum matching twoport, one has to know the stochastic an deterministic parameters of the LNA. These are the variances of the equivalent input noise voltage and current and their complex correlation coefficient as well as the scattering matrix or any other twoport matrix of the LNA. A new method to characterize the above mentioned stochastic parameters has been developed and tested. Future work will aim at extension of the matching network for antenna arrays.
