The Late Period in Egypt (here comprising the 21st to 30th dynasties) differs in many respects from older periods and also has other types of sources. The history of this period has never been a favourite topic in Egyptology and the relevant literature is mainly outdated. It is planned to give a comprehensive history of the late period, based not only on the few sources that make explicit statements of historical events, but to capture and include all possible information provided by textual and archaeological sources. In the first (main) part, these textual and archaeological sources are presented and explained in detail to make an extensive survey of their (direct and indirect) information concerning facts and events, structures, persons and institutions. The second part is to put forward the results of this close study of the sources concerning rulers and chronology, external relations, internal politics and society as well as culture and religion. The result should be a kind of "manual" which not only describes the history of the Late Period but allows the user to assess the possibilities and limits of historical research into this period.
