MIMO backscatter transmission based on multi-antenna transponders in RFID-based communication systems

The principle of backscatter modulation, mostly know from RFID systems (radio frequency identification), which is based on transmitting data by modulating the backscatter behaviour of a transponder is proliferating more and more into new applications as a technology for wireless exchange of e.g. sensor data. The aim of this proposal is to combine the principle of backscatter modulation with MIMO transmission schemes (multiple-input multiple-output) in order to enhance range, reliability and spectral efficiency of RFID-based communication systems. Backscatter modulation with its resulting dyadic channel structure is fundamentally different to classical radio systems. The focus of research in this proposal is to develop concepts for a MIMO transmission based on multi antenna transponders, whereas particularly the coupling of the closely spaced antennas is taken into consideration. The coupling exhibits a crucial influence on the modulation quality in backscatter systems due to its effect on the effective transponder antenna impedance. Additionally the backscattered power and the radiation characteristics of the antennas and their correlation are impaired. Thus, a theoretical model for the relation between coupling, modulation, correlation and capacity is developed and the influence on the achievable data or bit error rates is investigated. Different variants of multi-antenna backscatter transponders are realized and, based on the 4-port vector network analyzer a MIMO testbed is implemented to investigated the backscatter channel and the performance of the transponders in various scenarios.
