We study the dynamics of complex fluids in confined geometries (i.e., near walls or between two larger particles) in the framework of the dynamic density functional theory (DDFT). This non-equilibrium extension of the equilibrium density functional theory (DFT) allows to describe the collective dynamics of interacting Brownian particles at the microscopic level in terms of an evolution equation for the particle density. We will address issues related to the application of tracer particle based fluid velocimetry methods in the vicinity of walls, to boundary conditions for hydrodynamic equations describing the flow of suspensions in small channels, and to fluid structure mediated interactions among particles as well as between particles and walls (so-called depletion interactions). To this end, we extend the dynamic density functional theory to include the effect of solvent flow and hydrodynamic interactions between particles and walls.
