The Remy group has discovered that a mechanistic coupling of motor signaling and hippocampal theta-oscillations is achieved via a complex circuitry connecting the medial septum and the diagonal Band of Broca with the hippocampus. This circuitry actively controls movement velocity during locomotion, entrains movement-correlated theta oscillations and leads to velocity-adapted membrane potential changes in CA1 principal neurons and neurons of the medial entorhinal cortex. The project will now delve into the functional integration of medial septal neurons into locomotor circuits. It will examine specifically how neuromodulatory projections from the locus coeruleus and the median raphe systemmodulate septo-hippocampal function and behavior.
