High-performance UWB systems for biomedical diagnostics and short-range communications

Ultra-wide band (UWB) RF techniques offer well-recognized advantages for biomedical applications, both in communication links, e.g, with implanted sensors and actuators, or as a radar-like diagnostic tool exploiting tissue-specific differences in refractive index or dielectric dispersion characteristics. Advantages over existing techniques include a low spectral power density reducing concerns over interference with existing medical equipment or interactions with biological systems, non-ionizing radiation, low power consumption, and low cost. The proposed research project targets significant performance improvements over currently reported work throughincreased miniaturization and reduced cost of the UWB transmitters and receivers, realized monolithically on Silicon,¿ novel antenna structures in one- and two-dimensional arrays,¿ increased sensitivity and robustness through new system concepts including appropriate signal processing,¿ inclusion of communication applications and radar-like diagnostic/imaging in one system concept.Together with biomedical researchers and clinical specialists from the University of Ulm s University Hospitals, promising applications are being identified. They will guide and benefit from the close co-design of antenna, RF/analog electronics, and signal processing.
