Subject Area

Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 24101972
The Bonn Graduate School of Economics (BGSE) will offer a single, internationally competitive doctoral programme in all research areas represented in the Economics Department. In addition to the traditional core areas of economics, i.e., microeconomics, macroeconomics, public economics, econometrics, and statistics, it will encompass the more business-oriented fields of management and finance.
Compared to current German practice, the most novel feature of the graduate school is that, instead of requiring a Master's degree (or equivalent) as an entry condition, it will be designed to attract and admit highly qualified students holding a Bachelor's degree (not necessarily in economics), allowing them to focus on research-oriented training, and obtaining a doctoral degree in significantly shorter time than they currently do in Germany. For this purpose, the BGSE will combine a Master's Programme characterised by a research-oriented teaching programme, with a dissertation stage. This programme structure is particularly appropriate for attracting and preparing foreign students and students whose first degree is not in economics. Students will enter the BGSE through a centralised application process.
A second novelty is that all graduate students pursuing a doctoral degree from the Economics Department will study in the BGSE. In addition to demonstrating their competence in the core fields of economics, they will be required to pursue advanced studies in at least two of the five fields of specialisation offered by the BGSE, i.e., microeconomic theory, management and applied microeconomics, financial economics, macroeconomics and public economics, and econometrics and statistics. All faculty members of the Economics Department will contribute to the teaching and supervision of the students in the BGSE.
The academic profile of the BGSE will rest on the joint research activities of the Economics Department such as the Bonn branch of the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 15 and the Research Training Group "Quantitative Economics" as well as the ongoing cooperation between the Economics Department, the MPI, and IZA. All activities of the BGSE will be conducted in English. This is not only essential for attracting highly qualified foreign students to the programme, but also indispensable for preparing German students for the national and international job markets in which they will compete after having obtained their degree. Admission to the BGSE will be competitive on the basis of academic qualification. Only outstanding students will be considered for admission.
