The use of piezoelectric transducers is especially suited for the damping of vibrations with high frequencies and small amplitudes. In contrast shape memory alloys especially useful for the damping of low frequencies and large amplitudes. These two types of vibration damping technologies represent ideal complementary solutions. The purpose of this project is the design of passive and semi-active systems in order to reduce vibrations using a combination of piezoelectric and shape memory elements. Thus it will be possible to cover larger frequency spectra and amplitude ranges. Therefore an ideal adaption of both components is necessary. The system design is based on analytical constitutive models for shape memory alloys as well as piezoelectric transducers, representing the hysteresis and transformation behavior. While the damping effect of shape memory alloys is caused by the hysteresis of the material, the frequency dependent dampening effects of piezoelectric transducers is achieved through wiring via passive and semi-active electrical networks.Applications for such damping systems are numerous and appear in the field of systems excited in a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes. Examples are hand-operated machine tools, engine mount systems and vehicles. In this project in particular, a seat post for a bicycle will be designed and constructed.
