Final Report Abstract
Dr. Wojciech Z. Misiolek is a Loewy Chair of Materials Forming and Processing and the Director of the Institute for Metal Forming, as well as a tenured Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Mechechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, USA. Dr. Misiolek spent the summer months of 2014 and 2015 working with the Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction (IUL) at TU Dortmund University, directed by Professor A. Erman Tekkaya. During his combined six month stay in Dortmund, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) supported his work as a Mercator Visiting Professor. He has been collaborating very closely with the IUL research staff and Ph.D. candidates, advising them with their current research as well as their long term career goals. Professor Misiolek has enjoyed two very productive and beneficial summers working at the TU Dortmund University. All of his research and teaching activities were related to metal forming processing, deformation process engineering and optimization, as well as materials characterization of deformed structures. In 2015 he gave a seminar focused on Additive Manufacturing of copper and copper alloys. This seminar was based on research performed at Lehigh University along with his team of associates. This seminar was given to the entire Mechanical Engineering Department at TU Dortmund and generated a considerable amount of interest in this relatively new research topic. During his visit, Professor Misiolek participated in a number of projects which resulted in five joint papers that have been and/or are being submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. Thanks to many discussions with Professor A. Erman Tekkaya, Dr. Nooman Ben Khalifa and Dr. Matthias Haase, a considerable list of potential projects has emerged, which have been outlined for future cooperation. These projects will serve as a foundation for future collaboration among both the research staff and students at IUL and IMF. The Mercator Professorship awarded to Professor Wojciech Z. Misiolek was a notable achievement that allowed him to attend two editions (2014 and 2015) of the International Conference on Non-Ferrous Metals in Krakow, Poland, where he presented his educational and research papers. Additionally, he gave eight seminar lectures at various universities and research centers in Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Poland.
