Chronic inflammatory processes of the lung may induce sustained alveolar destruction and fibrosis. To date these clinical relevant pathomechanisms are explained insufficiently. Numerous lung diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) are characterized by malfunctioning repair processes. A central role of these repair mechanisms plays the TGF-beta signaling pathway. Using a transcriptom array our group identified molecules of infection-induced inflammation and described for the first time the TGF-beta-Pseudoreceptor BMP and Activin Membrane-Bound Inhibitor (BAMBI) inhibiting TGF-beta signals. Due to the central role of TGF-beta in regeneration and tissue remodeling the investigation of TGF-beta inhibiting molecules is of particular importance. In the presented project we want to characterize the impact of TGF-beta pseudoreceptor BAMBI in lung fibrosis.
