EXC 153: Ursprung und Struktur des Universums
Astrophysik und Astronomie
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Wie ist das Universum entstanden und woraus besteht es? Was treibt seine Entwicklung an? Wie entstanden die grundlegenden Bausteine, Galaxien, Sterne und Planeten? Wie entstanden die Elemente, aus denen wir bestehen? Das Verständnis dieser grundlegenden Fragen erfordert eine Synthese sehr unterschiedlicher Forschungsgebiete, von der Kern- und Teilchenphysik über die Astrophysik bis hin zur Kosmologie. Im Rahmen des 2006 gegründeten Exzellenzclusters "Origin and Structure of the Universe" haben mehr als 70 lokale Forschergruppen gemeinsam die Entstehung und Struktur des Universums untersucht. München/Garching mit seinen beiden Universitäten, vier MPIs und der ESO ist ein idealer Standort für ein solches Projekt, einzigartig in Europa und in Qualität, Breite und Produktivität von nur wenigen Standorten weltweit erreicht. UNIVERSE versammelte Forscher aus verschiedenen Disziplinen, um gemeinsam einige der tiefgründigsten und faszinierendsten Rätsel der Wissenschaft zu lösen. Es schuf neue nachhaltige Strukturen (MIAPP, C2PAP) und hervorragende wissenschaftliche Infrastruktur, zehn Professuren, startete neue Kooperationen und erhöhte die internationale Sichtbarkeit. Über ein Seed Money Schema wurden zahlreiche Entwicklungen initiiert, welche nun im Cluster ORIGINS weiter verfolgt werden (z.B. MADMAX axion search experiment, Teilchenphysik auf Nanosatelliten, hoch empfindliche EDM-Experimente, hochauflösende kosmische Struktursimulation). UNIVERSE verbesserte erheblich die Zusammenarbeit zwischen allen beteiligten Institutionen durch seine übergreifenden Forschungsprojekte und Datenanalysen sowie der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. MIAPP überbrückte Institutionen und Bereiche und fungierte als Türöffner für internationale Kooperationen. Cluster-Wissenschaftler erzielten wichtige wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse und machten wichtige neue technische Entwicklungen. Sie entwickelten ein grundlegendes Verständnis von Supernova-Explosionen und stellarer Nukleosynthese, basierend auf neuen Erkenntnissen der Neutrinophysik, entdeckten eine junge Galaxienpopulation, beobachteten energiereiche Prozesse im galaktischen Zentrum und studierten die Bedeutung zentraler Schwarzer Löcher für die Galaxienentwicklung. Neue Erkenntnisse in der Teilchenphysik wurden durch die Inbetriebnahme des LHC mit der Entdeckung des Higgs-Teilchens und Einschränkungen der Parameter für die Supersymmetrie gewonnen. Der erste Nachweis von solaren 7Be Neutrinos war ebenso spannend wie neue Ausschlussgrenzen bei der direkten Suche nach dunkler Materie mit CRESST. Teilchen- und Astrophysiker (ICECUBE/ESO) fanden erste Hinweise auf die Entstehung hochenergetischer kosmischer Neutrinos. Neue interdisziplinäre wissenschaftliche Kooperationen wurden aufgebaut, wie z.B. zwischen nuklearer Astrophysik und Teilchenphysik, mit gemeinsamer Datenanalyse und theoretischer Modellierung. Diese Zusammenarbeit führte auch zu einer umfassenden Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und zu einer eigenen Ausstellung im Deutschen Museum.
