Objective of the project is the extension of the Magnetic Particle Imaging system that has been developed at the institute and which operates at a drive-field frequency of 10 kHz to mobility MPI (mMPI) allowing the separate imaging of the spatial distribution of bound and unbound magnetic markers. On the one hand, the mMPI represents an extension of MPI, as it was realized at Philips, Bruker and in Berkeley, to a molecular imaging in which mobility and binding status, respectively, of the particles are determined. On the other hand, it allows the application of MPI, e.g., for the realization of spatially resolved homogeneous bioassays. The available MPI system will be extended to two drive-field frequencies: 5 kHz (here a large portion of magnetic markers follows the drive field via the Brownian mechanism) and 25 kHz (this frequency provides a direct compatibility with the MPI systems at Philips, Bruker and Berkeley). The performance of the realized mMPI system will be demonstrated by measurements on special phantoms and by the realization of a spatially resolved homogeneous liquid-phase assay.
