GRK 2043:  Natural Hazards and Risks in a Changing World (NatRisk-Change)

Subject Area Geophysics and Geodesy
Water Research
Term from 2015 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 251036843

Project Description

In the wake of changing climatological, hydrological, geo-physical and socio-economic conditions, the magnitudes, frequencies and impacts of natural hazards are likely bound to change as well. This is of utmost importance for many regions in the world where risks from natural hazards have to be coped with, managed and mitigated. And this is where the research training group “Natural Hazards and Risks in a Changing World” (NatRiskChange) aims to enhance the scientific knowledge basis: its central goal is to pursue the development of methods that improve the analysis, quantification and prediction of transient hazards and risks by actively exchanging knowledge and methods among complex system analysis, geoenvironmental sciences, and risk research. The mathematically-oriented scientists contribute methods of statistical inference, especially Bayesian, the theory of dynamical systems, with a particular focus on nonlinear processes and chaos, recurrence plots and further innovative methods for the analysis of time series. Geo- and environmental scientists, on the other hand, contribute their knowledge on underlying mechanisms and processes of change with regard to different hazards, including aspects of geographical peculiarities, hazard interaction and vulnerabilities. This interdisciplinary research of NatRiskChange started in October 2015 and is accompanied by a qualification programme on statistics, data analysis and risk quantification. Qualification concept and research programme are complementary and deeply anchored in the expertise of the participating institutions in Potsdam and Berlin paving new research avenues for quantifying changes in geo-, hydro- and socio-ecosystems.
