JETmill - Pre-contouring of hard to machine materials using abrasive waterjets

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term from 2014 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 251876593

The goal of this investigation is to expand the basic knowledge for creating notches with a high aspect ratio and small irregularities in the notch base in terms of creating freeform notch bases. The focus of the investigation is on the effect of the secondary jet. The challenge is that the magnitude of this effect depends on the geometry that is manufactured. In addition, notches with an angle to the workpiece surface will be created based on the knowledge that was gained in the first funding period. Furthermore, this angle will be changed during the movement over the workpiece resulting in an angle as a function of the location. This change of angle will have a major effect on the topography of the flank surface. Empirical models will be developed to expand the existing models from the first funding period using design of experiments. The experiments will be conducted on the material titanium aluminide Ti 45Al-5Nb-0.2C-0.2B (TNBV5) which was used in the previous investigation.
