Project B03 investigates how the valuation of irrelevant signals contributes to attentional selection in controlled and natural task settings. We examine how the visual system down-weights distractors that would otherwise capture attention and impair task performance, and use EEG markers of selection and suppression to do so. In addition, we examine distractor handling in more natural selection settings, in which irrelevant signals may also facilitate target selection, using behavioral measures, gaze and motion tracking. Our goal is to understand the processes involved in distractor handling to develop an integrative view of valuation in attentional selection.
