Functional characterization of basophils in vivo

Subject Area Immunology
Term from 2014 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 256159038

Basophils are associated with allergic reactions and protective immunity against helminths. Development and effector functions of basophils are poorly characterized. Using retroviral transductions and adoptive transfers of basophils and hematopoietic stem cells we will study the development and migration of basophils in vivo. We will further use mixed bone marrow chimeras generated with cells from basophil-deficient mice and different knock-out mice to study the role of basophils for allergic skin reactions and protective immunity against different helminths. The proposed project will improve the knowledge about basophil biology and may serve to develop new therapeutic strategies for treatment of allergic disorders.
