Experimental studies on the hydrodynamics, mass transfer and reaction in bubble swarms with ultrafast X-ray tomography and local probes

Subject Area Fluid Mechanics
Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering
Term from 2014 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 256728712

The project pursues the aim to assess essential aspects of the interplay of bubble swarm dynamics, bubble interface dynamics, mass transfer and reaction, particularly yield and selectivity, in reactive bubbly flows at high gas fractions by means of experiments with high-resolution dynamic imaging and measurement techniques. This is of particular value for the mesoscalic modelling of transport and reaction in bubbly flows. Hydrodynamics and mass transfer will be investigated with ultrafast X-ray tomography and X-ray assisted hot wire anemometry. The dynamic measurement of species concentration will be done with wire-mesh sensors and UV/Vis spectro-photometry. As reaction system we will use the reaction of Fe(II) complexes with NO and O2. Experimental studies will be designed and planned in close cooperation with the numerical groups of the priority programme.
