Systemic cancer progression is an evolutionary process with changing selective pressures on cancer cells. The genomes of cancer cells need to adapt to these pressures. Consequently, patterns in these genomes shed light on how this evolutionary process operates. However, to date there is no systematic computational approach that allows for the specific identification of mutations that make a cancer cell fit for dissemination, outgrowth in a specific niche, immune escape, and resistance to chemotherapy. The aim is to identify those genomic and epi-genomic changes that drive metastatic progression by applying novel computational methods.
