Factors affecting morphology and geometry of Arc-PVD coatings on complex part geometries

Due to the high degree of ionization in the plasma, microstructure and morphology of Arc-PVD coatings can be widely varied when bias voltages are used. On flat substrates this variability offers an advantageous toolbox for coating property modifications. However, for complex substrates, such as milling tools, the geometry dependence of electrical field density leads to local variations in coating structures and properties. Particularly sharp edges tend to be rounded, causing problems in practical applications since leading to less sharp tools. Costly post-coating mechanical treatments are necessary to maintain tool sharpness after coating. The aim of the project is an in-depth understanding of the interplay between geometry-dependent physical and chemical effects, microstructure and geometry of the resulting coatings and their properties. The scientific results will lay the foundation for knowledge-based geometry and property adjustment of coatings during deposition for complex component geometries.
