Computer-Based Development of Interdiffusion Coatings for High-Temperature-Corrosion Protection of Low-Alloy Steels

The bilateral research project aims at the development and computer modeling of a novel concept to apply corrosion-protective interdiffusion layers on top of low alloy steels for high-temperature applications, e.g., in power generation. Individual layers of Ni, Cr and Al will be applied to specimens by electrodeposition (Cranfield University). Adjusting a vacuum heat treatment of the electroplated specimens allows the generation of tailor-made gradient coatings that are capable to protect the substrate against high-temperature corrosion. This will be proven by oxidation testing (Univ. of Applied Sciences Osnabrück UOS). Focus of the project at UOS is the development of a computer model based on the cellular automat approach that accounts for multi-element interdiffusion, including (i) separation between bulk and grain boundary diffusion, (ii) mechanical stress effects and (iii) the formation of Kirkendall porosity. As a result, the interdiffusion coating process will be modeled and predicted with the objective to optimize the corrosion protection.
