The cathode model for GMA welding, which was successfully developed in the last phase, shows that the attachment of the arc to the weld pool is dependent on the surface temperature of the melt and thus does not exhibit axial symmetry. This now allows the precise calculation of the electromagnetic fields and forces in the area of the arc and melt pool. Therefore, the aim of the subproject is the purposeful control of the melt-driving electromagnetic Lorentz forces via the adjustment of the torch inclination to influence the melt pool flows. This opens a new possibility to control the weld seam geometry as well as the temperature fields and thus offers a new possibility for compensation. In addition, with the now understood coupling mechanism of arc and cathode (molten pool or workpiece), complex joint geometries such as fillet joints and overlap joints can also be simulated with previously unprecedented precision.
