Segmented shells: multi-element shell constructions inspired by skeletons of irregular sea urchins (A07)

Subject Area Structural Engineering, Building Informatics and Construction Operation
Applied Mechanics, Statics and Dynamics
Architecture, Building and Construction History, Construction Research, Sustainable Building Technology
Palaeontology
Term from 2014 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 231064407

The project analyses the segmented skeleton of the sand-dollar as a suitable concept generator for segmented shells. We have established a computational design model and evolutionary design algorithms for plate generation and distribution. In the second funding period, thin-walled Spatangoids will be studied to develop further hypotheses regarding the relationship of patterning and structural behaviour.
