The central idea of the Research Training Group Algorithmic Optimization (ALOP) is mathematical research in the field of algorithmic optimization. Correspondences and synergies between previously isolated sub-disciplines of mathematical optimization are also to be investigated and made usable for practical challenges. Since algorithmic optimization is an applied discipline of mathematics, it is necessary to focus on classes of applications. These application classes feed themselves for the RTG from the two areas of big data/statistics on the one hand, and economic equilibrium modelling on the other hand. This is mathematical basic research that is motivated by questions from statistics/economics. The group of PIs, which has been slightly modified in comparison to the initial proposal, has already been involved in the recruitment of the second cohort of doctoral students. The research program for the second phase differs from the first application in the details of the mathematical questions. However, the research orientation with regard to mathematically interdisciplinary algorithmic optimization with the application reference to statistics/economics will be maintained in the second phase, as numerous and worthwhile research questions have arisen in this scientific field in the first phase. The supervision concept of the Research Training Group continues to follow the principle that all doctoral students have at least two supervisors with complementary scientific backgrounds, together with mentors. The structure of the training program includes compulsory courses on current optimization topics relevant to the Research Training Group. In the first phase, the group of applicants successfully cooperated scientifically. This group has been changed to a small extent by appointments. Furthermore, the scientific orientation of the PI group is excellently compatible with the goals of the Research Training Group. The organization is supported on the education side by the integration into the graduate center of Trier University (GUT), and on the research side by scientific exchange with the research initiatives RIFOSS, DFG-FOR MikroSim, and TRICSS.
