The existence of sterile neutrinos is presently being discussed in connection with various anomalies in the neutrino sector and in cosmology. The models proposed are however often in conflict with each other and/or with other experimental data. In the research project proposed it is planned to study whether non-standard properties of these new particles can ameliorate or solve these contradictions. We focus hereby on new terms in the usual dispersion relation connecting a particle's energy and momentum. Such altered dispersion relations can occur due to matter effects, Lorentz invariance violation, comological triggered mass variations as well as the propagation in extra dimensions of specetime.
