Cortical circuits encoding distinct somatosensory modalities, such as heat, cold and pressure, are not well understood. Using multiphoton calcium imaging, in vivo electrophysiology, behavioral analyses and activity-mapping, we plan to study intracolumnar multicellular activity patterns across cortical layers that generate modality-specific ensembles, their cellular identity and function as well as their plasticity.
