Final Report Abstract

With the tracking code QPT a powerful instrument is available. It is much faster than full PIC codes and allows for first approaches over wide parameter ranges and for exploiting different designs. The planar deflection-modulated klystron is a possible solution especially if frequency multiplication to very high frequencies is used. A medium power 100GHz klystron seems possible. For some applications the poor linearity at small signals may be prohibitive. The most promising device is the corkscrew hollow beam klystron. Due to the large beam cross-section it is certainly well suited for high power applications in the 3 to 12GHz region. It has also high efficiency since the beam loses energy in the output cavity in a very mono- energetic way and is therefore well suited for depressed collectors. Because of the good results we have up to now, we will try to exploit this idea further in following projects. We will also look into the very high frequency range using frequency multiplication.
