Spin currents are indispensable for future spintronic devices. Here we both experimentally and theoretically investigate spin currents in semiconductors and nanostructures. We have established a versatile concept to detect these spin currents with a simultaneous spatial and temporal resolution of micrometers and picoseconds, respectively. In the second funding period we further investigate tuning knobs, e.g., optical doping and static electric fields, for the effective strength of the spin-orbit interaction. We will apply also these concepts to more sophisticated material systems, in particular to dilute magnetic semiconductors and, potentially, to hybrid structures with conventional ferromagnets.
