Coherent phonons are an effective launcher of magnetization precession at the nanoscale by elastic modulation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of a ferromagnet. Here we will use ultrafast acoustics for coherent magneto-phonon interactions. We will extend the frequencies of magnon-phonon coupling effects such as spin-pumping in a Galfenol spin valve up to THz and excite specific magnon modes using vertical and lateral resonators, aiming at demonstrating phonon-magnon conversion. In ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)(As,P) films we will realize a strain-induced reorientation of magnetization. We also plan to extend ultrafast magneto-acoustics to antiferromagnetic materials.
