This research project seeks to understand the decision to volunteer from a holistic perspective integrating demographic, economic, psychological, and sociological determinants to volunteer, to invest time to the voluntary activity and intentions to volunteer. Thereby these micro level determinants but also macro level determinants like to type of organisation (e.g., non-profit sport club or sport event) shall be assessed on a comparative level based on volunteer data from Germany and New Zealand. From a theoretical standpoint, behavioural economics serve as theoretical underpinning of this study since this view integrates different approaches from economics, sociology and psychology. Although some attempts have been made to use a broad view, research so far has mostly been small scale, atheoretical or conceptual (e.g., Burgham & Downward, 2005; Schlesinger & Nagel, 2013; Taylor, Panagouleas, & Nichols, 2012; Wicker & Hallmann, 2013). This research project shall close this gap.
