The manuscript collection of the Universitaets- und Landesbibliothek (ULB) Darmstadt emenated from the former Court Library of the Landgraves of Hessen-Darmstadt. To this day it represents one of the largest and distinguished collections of medieval manuscripts and is frequented by researchers from all over the world. The proposed project aims to produce a scholarly catalogue of the hitherto uncatalogued section of literary texts and texts related to specific fields. The catalogue will constitute volume 7 of the series of manuscript catalogues of the ULB Darmstadt, thus contributing to make accessible more than 90 per cent of the complete manuscript collection for scientific research. The 137 manuscripts selected for this project can be classified into to seven sections: Law (Corpus iuris civilis), Philosophy / Theology, Historical Science, Literature, Linguistics, Natural Sciences, Geography. Most of them are written in Latin, a few in late medieval vernacular languages (German, French, Italian). Among the manuscripts are many illuminated ones. From what we know so far, it can be expected that the cataloguing process will bring to light numerous unknown textual witnesses. The project will thus bring forth results of relevance not only for scholars of medieval studies but also to research concerning, e.g. history of science. The cataloguing is to be conducted at the Centre for Manuscripts at Wuerttembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart. The results will be published online via Manuscripta Mediaevalia (www.manuscripta-mediaevalia.de).
