Investigation of the thermochromic behaviour of coloured polymer-commpounds

Subject Area Plastics Engineering
Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering
Term from 2015 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 271517951

The thermochromism as a reversible temperature dependency of the color of polymer-based materials has not been researched in depth, yet. By now, it is not understood in detail how temperature variation affects color changes in complex polymer systems. Color became an important quality criterion in plastics processing. With the aim to decrease the amount of speck-off materials by time-saving measurement techniques color measurement systems are adapted close to the production line. Thus, evaluation of color at elevated temperatures is a great challenge dealing with thermochromic phenomena attending the entire production chain. For determining thermally-induced color transitions in polymer-compounds extensive studies of commonly used polymer-compounds regarding to molecular and structural properties and molecular interaction between different components must be carried out. Models describing thermally-induced color transitions of polymer-compounds need to be developed and validated in order to improve predictability and evaluation of color characteristics based on VIS- spectroscopic measurement techniques.
