Within this project we will study alternative methods of generating ultra short magnetic field pulses. The approaches are based on laser pulse excitation of ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic materials. In the case of FeRh the ultra short laser pulse is used to generate ferromagnetic order by rapidly heating the material across the antiferromagnet/ferromagnet transition temperature. In the case of EuO we will use circularly polarized light with energy below the band gap of the ferromagnetic semiconductor to generate an effective internal field. In both cases we intend to study the effect of ultra fast field generation and control on a thin ferromagnetic layer deposited on top of the ¿driving¿ material.
