Hydrodynamic processes during filling and emptying of aerated underground pumped storage reservoirs

Subject Area Geotechnics, Hydraulic Engineering
Term from 2015 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 277684102

For the development of underground pumped storage plants the fundamental knowledge of the global flow effects and the local flow processes in the underground pumped storage reservoir is necessary. The aim of this project is the systematic description of the flow processes in underground pumped storage reservoirs which arise depending on the geometry through the changing of the outflow. The effect of the individual factors channel length, channel cross section, number of channels, channel slope as well as flow rate, water level and opening or closing rate of the closure devices on the functionality of underground pumped storage plants should be determined, thus developing the technical basis for a structural and functional design. To understand the local and global flow processes as a basis for the future design and to describe on a physical basis, systematic physical model tests and numerical 2D and 3D modeling as part of a hybrid modeling are carried out.
