Chiral laser desorption
Final Report Abstract
The project “chiral laser desorption” was initiated to understand the interaction between circularly polarized light and chiral materials. In the first round of the project, we observed that polarization of light indeed plays a role in the process, hence hinting towards nonthermal contributions to the desorption process. In this project we wanted to examine this phenomenon in details to understand the governing mechanisms. We still need to continue our search for a full understanding of chiral laser desorption, however, on our way we have made other unexpected discoveries that can be of high application potential in the industry. We observed that for chiral films, the relation between optical activity and enantiomeric excess is not linear anymore. This paves the way for many applications such as range-specific chiroptical sensors in theranostics or in spintronics.
