The Institute of Chemistry (IfC) of the Humboldt University Berlin focuses on two principal research fields: Functional Materials and Catalysis, and Chemical Biology. In the field of functional materials most of the research groups are concerned with nanomaterials synthesis, structure and properties elucidation and applications. Most of these studies rely on transmission electron microscopy as one of the principal techniques for investigating those nanostructured materials. The need of a transmission electron microscope increased dramatically since Prof. Pinna joined the department in July 2012. In spring 2014, Prof. Pinna, in order to allow his research group to function, installed in his office a 20-years old transmission electron microscope, which was generously donated by the Fritz Haber Institute. Due to the age and location of the microscope this should be only seen as a temporary solution to cope with the lack of the required measurement time for his group. In the present application, four principal investigators of the IfC are applying for a transmission electron microscope needed to carry out bright/dark field, phase contrast and chemical analysis of the very different nanostructured samples the four groups produce. The ideal microscope is a 80-200 kV microscope equipped with a i) LaB6 filament, ii) high resolution pole piece, iii) sample holder for several TEM grids, iv) EDX system, v) a fast, sensitive and high resolution CMOS (4096x4096 pixels) camera, and vi) a scanning unit. The microscope will be under the scientific responsibility of Prof. Pinna. Dr. Gianvito Caputo, member of the group of Prof. Pinna, and Dr. Holm Kirmse (Institute of Physics) will organize the measurement times, instruct new users and be responsible of the maintenance. The core team will be completed by one technician of the group of Prof. Panne.
