Project Details
The role of soil moisture and surface- and subsurface water flows on predictability of convection (A05)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
from 2015 to 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 257899354
The hypothesis that improvements in convective precipitation predictability can be achieved by a more sophisticated treatment of terrestrial hydrological processes in numerical weather prediction models will be investigated. This method will be compared and combined with a stochastic boundary layer parameterization method to account for land-atmosphere exchange variability originating from surface and subsurface lateral water flows. This will enable the critical atmospheric sensitivities to a physically enhanced representation of soil-moisture processes to be assessed.
