Impact of microphysical uncertainties on supercell storm predictions around the world (B01)

Subject Area Atmospheric Science
Term since 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 257899354

Supercell storms and associated large hail frequently cause severe damage in various regions around the globe despite substantial differences in regional atmospheric conditions. These events are typically difficult to forecast and the model presentation of cloud processes constitutes a major source of uncertainty. In this project, we explore how cloud process uncertainty and regional differences in atmospheric conditions interact and shape the practical predictability of supercell-associated high-impact weather in different geographic regions. Strategies for obtaining model constraints from targetted observations and thereby for improving practical predictability will be explored.
