Solid-state actuators on the basis of piezoelectric ceramics or magnetostrictive alloys possess high stiffness, but are only able to create low displacements. Therefore they are predestined for the introduction of strong forces in stiff structures for example with the purpose of an active vibration damping at higher frequencies. Magnetic shape memory alloys (MSM-alloys), however, are characterised by a clearly lower stiffness, but also a considerably higher strain. Through this they would allow their application for instance as dynamic absorbers at low frequencies without requiring a displacement amplification system. In addition the distinctive material damping of MSM-alloys might support the innovative concept of a multifunctional vibration damper. Based on the applicant s substantial experiences in the field of vibration damping with active materials, in this research project the properties of MSM-materials as well as appropriate concepts to realise a new type of MSM-actuators for vibration damping will be analysed theoretically and experimentally. In this connection rod-shaped bulk and composite materials are of particular interest. The Priority Programme enables a close cooperation with material scientists. In this way optimal conditions will be created to facilitate the elaboration of the best MSM solutions for the scientifically and economically interesting application area of vibration damping .
