VD 18: Digitisation and 1 ndexing of the 18th century imprints from german speaking countries of the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Düsseldorf

The German Research Foundation (DFG) supports the project VD 18, a catalog of all prints of the 18th century (1701 - 1800) which were published in the German language area. The objective of VD 18 is not only to capture metadata in a central index, but also to provide digital images of the historic prints which will be published online at no charge. VD 18 will provide the retrospective German national bibliography of the 18th century and therefore extends the tradition of cataloging literature of previous centuries, as implemented in the projects VD 16 and VD 17 for the 16th and 17th century respectively. The University and State Library (ULB) Düsseldorf contributes to VD 18 with 1.500 volumes of its historic monographs and periodicals of the 18th century. The literature will be structurally indexed according DFG standards, cataloged on the required national bibliographic level, scanned and published online under an open access license. Thereby, the 18th century prints of the ULB will become part of the "VD 18 collection", displayed primarily in the national portal (DFG viewer), but also in the local digital collections website of the ULB ("Digitale Sammlungen").
