In project A05, we investigate halos and clustering through reaction experiments and their accurate analysis within effective field theories. At the neutron drip line, the loose binding of valence neutrons enables them to decouple from the core of the nucleus, leading to halos and unique multi-neutron correlations. The neutron-neutron scattering length will be measured precisely from neutron final-state interactions after knock-out reactions at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory in Japan, and analyzed with a consistent theory of the reaction and nuclear structure.
