In project A05 crystal symmetry-based mechanisms underlying the manipulation of magnetic order by spin torques and spin currents in magnetic materials with zero net magnetization are investigated. The project focuses on two specific effects, namely the Néel spin-orbit torque in antiferromagnets and the spin-splitter torque originating from altermagnets. The ultimate speed limit of current-driven manipulation of the Néel vector in antiferromagnets will be studied, along with methods to maximize efficiency. Furthermore, we will develop a novel efficient approach to manipulate magnetization in ferromagnetic layers by coupling to altermagnets.
