Reconsidering creativity measurement

Subject Area Developmental and Educational Psychology
Term Funded in 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 290381658

Creativity is regarded as a key component for children, adolescents, and adults. Nonethe-less, research on creativity and creativity development is rare, which in part might be due to ongoing challenges in measuring creativity. As a result, creativity is not a very common construct to be considered in empirical studies within Educational Research, Educational Psychology or Developmental Psychology. Attempts to better understand and to assess creativity while taking its complex struc-ture into consideration are not new (Guilford, 1967; Torrance, 1966; Urban, 1988; 1995). Still, only initial attempts exist that aim at generating data, which fulfill standard quality criteria (Lubart, Pacteau, Jacquet & Caroff, 2010; Theurer, Berner & Lipowsky, submitted). The intention of the project is to replicate a French study, which proposed modifica-tions in the scoring system of a well-established creativity test. Test sheets from a com-pleted German project shall be re-analyzed to evaluate the proposed modifications. The expected outcome can serve to improve creativity measurement by modifying an estab-lished creativity test. Long- as well as mid-term objective is to provide data that suffice requirements of data quality, which could make it more likely for creativity to be consid-ered in empirical studies.
