Atomistic simulations of dislocations in bcc high-entropy alloys

Subject Area Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 290959824

The plastic deformation of bcc metals is mediated by screw dislocations. Their present understanding is mostly based on elemental bcc systems and little is known about the fundamental behaviour of screw dislocations in compound solid solutions like high-entropy alloys. The aim of this proposal is therefore to understand the properties of dislocations in the MoWTaNb high-entropy alloy and to separate the influence of average atomic properties and of local chemical ordering. This is achieved by atomistic simulations of screw dislocations using analytic bond-order potentials.
