Thematic apperception tests are a valid method for the measurement of implicit motives. The projects aim is adapting the application and evaluation of thematic apperception tests to the technical possibilities that are given nowadays using computers. The core aim is to develop an automated method for analyzing the data input comprised of stories written by test persons after they were confronted with a pictorial test item. In addition to the simplification of data collection by the PC an automated analysis ensures a maximum of objectivity and thus an extensive revision of the reliability and validity indices of thematic apperception tests. A very promising method for the development of such an automatic coding system is machine learning, for it is most similar to human learning processes. So, based on the coding system of Heckhausen a supervised machine learning program will be developed. Furthermore, three experimental pre-post-studies serve the proof of external validity and guarantee the method is not only internal but also external valid.
