Rates and processes of tephra alteration in Surtsey volcano: a combined observational and experimental approach

Subject Area Palaeontology
Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term from 2016 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 292688873

Final Report Year 2020

Final Report Abstract

The project was successful in designing and implementing an in situ borehole incubation experiment. The incubation experiment was terminated, and the materials inside the incubation chambers are currently undergoing microbiological and mineralogical investigations. The project laid ground for two ungoing projects: Andreas Türke’s followup postdoctoral project at the University of Bergen and Mathias Peter’s Ph.D. thesis work in the laboratory of collaborator Andreas Lüttge. The flow-through experiments yielded initial results and are being continued in a collaboration between Bergen and Bremen. The drill core materials were sucessfully scanned and the data are shared with the scientific community.
